On Hitler as Kitsch

In Thailand, Hitler’s face appears on souvenir T-shirts.  It’s superimposed on Ronald McDonald outfits and pink Teletubbies.  Symbols associated with the Third Reich have become marketing icons, not for weapons or for anything having to do with conquest or genocide, but for potato chips, sports teams and other mementos of fashion chic.  Thus the fate of the thousand-year Reich: to be reduced to merchandizing.

The ultimate degradation of a totalitarian ideology is to become a tool of free enterprise.  It’s also the most fitting fate.  A political program that would enslave individual men and women is itself captured and enslaved, made to increase the fortunes of those very individuals who would have been its victims.
